Source: Kapitales Research

Highlights:

  • Operational Control Gained: Woodside Energy (ASX: WDS) has taken full operational control of the Beaumont New Ammonia facility in Texas, boosting its ammonia production capabilities.
  • Expansion Potential: With an annual capacity of 1.1 million tonnes, the facility has the potential to significantly increase US ammonia exports, driving economic growth in the region.
  • Strategic Acquisition: Woodside acquired OCI Clean Ammonia for US$2.35 billion in September 2024, with plans to begin lower-carbon ammonia production post-2026.

Woodside Expands Operations in the US

Woodside Energy Group Ltd. (ASX: WDS) has now assumed full operational control of the Beaumont New Ammonia (BNA) facility in Texas, marking a key achievement in its strategic expansion efforts. As of the time of writing, the company saw a gain of nearly 1.25%, with a current market price of AU$34.040. This move follows the successful performance testing and handover from OCI Global, positioning Woodside to become a key player in the global ammonia market.

Potential to Double US Ammonia Exports

The BNA facility is capable of producing up to 1.1 million tonnes of ammonia annually, potentially doubling the US’s ammonia exports. This expansion is expected to boost the regional economy and enhance Woodside's diversified portfolio. The acquisition of the facility is part of the company’s broader strategy to invest in low-carbon energy products and services. While the production of lower-carbon ammonia is expected to commence after 2026, Woodside remains focused on ensuring a steady supply to meet current demand.

Strategic Acquisition and Future Growth

In September 2024, Woodside fully acquired OCI Clean Ammonia Holding B.V. for an all-cash amount of around US$2.35 billion. The transaction covered capital expenditure up to completion, with Woodside paying 80% at the acquisition and the remaining 20% upon taking operational control of the facility.

Woodside continues to strengthen its position in the ammonia market by securing offtake agreements and progressing with plans for lower-carbon ammonia production in the long term. Top management emphasized that the company’s strategic focus on lower-carbon services aligns with global shifts toward more sustainable energy solutions.

Looking Ahead to 2026

As Woodside moves forward with ammonia production, the company anticipates that the production of lower-carbon ammonia will begin after 2026, once construction issues at the third-party feedstock supply facility are resolved. This positions Woodside to contribute significantly to the future growth of a competitive, lower-carbon ammonia sector.
