Vulcan Energy Resources Limited Obtains Lithium Production Permit for the Lionheart Project
Vulcan Energy Resources Limited (ASX: VUL) has reached an important regulatory milestone after obtaining its first licence to produce lithium for the Lionheart Project in Germany’s Upper Rhine Valley Brine Field. The permit, named LiThermEx, applies to the Insheim geothermal production licence area and marks the first authorisation for lithium production issued in both the Upper Rhine Valley Brine Field and the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate.
This development further strengthens the project’s advancement, particularly as Lionheart is already funded and under construction following a €2.2 billion financing package completed in December 2025. The project is expected to generate close to 24,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide monohydrate annually, an output that may be sufficient to support battery production for nearly 500,000 electric vehicles each year. Alongside lithium production, the integrated facility is also expected to generate around 275 GWh of renewable electricity and about 560 GWh of renewable heat each year for regional consumption. The initial licence period is six years, with plans to extend operations to align with the project’s estimated 30-year life.
