Mid-Market: S&P/ASX 200 Trading Lower; Dragged Down By Tech And Mining Stocks

On 27 March 2026, at AEDT 12:30 PM, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 is trading lower today, declining 55.40 points or 0.65%, and is currently trading at 8,470.30 levels. Out of 11, 10 sectors are trading lower along with the loss in the S&P/ASX 200.

The Energy sector is the only gaining sector, gaining 0.77% in its index value. On the other hand, Information Technology and Healthcare sectors are the top 2 declining sectors, declining 1.81% and 1.32% in their index values.

Treasury Wine Estates Limited (ASX: TWE) and Whiehaven Coal Limited (ASX: WHC) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 5.786% and 3.977% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Droneshield Limited (ASX: DRO) and Predictive Discovery Limited (ASX: PDI) are the top-losing stocks and are declining by 13.170% and 7.095% in their stock prices.

Factors influencing the market-

  • Australian shares dropped as investors analyzed mixed signals regarding a possible US-Iran peace agreement, with President Donald Trump pushing back his deadline for targeting Iran’s energy assets until April.
  • Suncorp saw a modest increase after the company announced that its CEO, Steve Johnston, would take a brief temporary leave to recover from a medical procedure. Jeremy Robson, the current CFO, will act as CEO during this time.
  • BlueScope Steel saw a decline of almost 1% as it intensified efforts to capitalize on its 1200-hectare surplus land holdings. The company is moving forward with new leasing and development projects in New South Wales and Victoria, with over 60% of the land already zoned for development.
  • Silex Systems Limited rose after its US joint venture, Global Laser Enrichment, received preliminary approval for a US$98.9 million incentive package to support the development of its planned laser enrichment facility in Paducah, Kentucky.
  • The Dow Jones closed down by 1.01%, S&P 500 declined by 1.74% and Nasdaq was down by 2.38% in the previous session.
  • Hang Seng is down by 1.89%, and FTSE 100 is down by 1.33%.
