ASX/200 Closed Lower by 0.03%, Dragged down by Information Technlogy
By the end of trading session on 09 January 2026, benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed 0.03% lower at 8,717.80. Out of 11 sectors, 05 sectors ended higher along with the S&P/ASX 200.
Energy and Consumer Staples were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 2.12% and 1.02% in their values. On the other hand, Information Technology and A-REIT was the top-losing sector, losing 0.48% and 0.41% in its value.
Codan Limited (ASX: CDA) and Karoon Energy Limited (ASX: KAR) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 16.888% and 5.137% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Rio Tinto Limited (ASX: RIO) and Nickel Industries Limited (ASX: NIC) are the top-losing stocks, losing 6.271% and 4.688% in their stock prices.
Codan jumped 16.9% to $36.89 after the company said it expects underlying net profit after tax for the December half to rise about 52%, driven by stronger demand for its metal detection products.
Biotechnology group Mesoblast gained 4.1% to $3.07 after reporting gross revenue of US$35.1 million from Ryoncil sales in the December quarter, representing a 60% increase compared with the previous period.
Gaming machine maker Aristocrat Leisure edged up 1% to $57.22 after expanding its on-market share buyback by a further $750 million over the next 12 months through to March 5, 2027, lifting the total buyback program to $1.5 billion.
Steel producer BlueScope climbed 2% to $30 after Jarden released a sum-of-the-parts valuation of $36 per share, following the company’s decision to reject a $30 takeover proposal from SGH and Steel Dynamics.
Oil prices continued to move higher as markets reacted to U.S. President Donald Trump’s warnings toward Iran, alongside increased scrutiny of Washington’s efforts to influence Venezuela’s oil exports and energy sector.
At the time of writing, global equity markets were mixed. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up about 0.55%, the S&P 500 was slightly higher by around 0.01%, while the Nasdaq was down roughly 0.44%.
In Asia and Europe, the Hang Seng was up 0.15% and the FTSE 100 was marginally lower by 0.04%.
