S&P/ASX 200 Fell 0.77% following Hawkish Instance Of FED

By the end of the trading session on 08 March 2023, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 0.77% and settled at 7,307.80. Out of 11 sectors, 9 sectors closed lower along with the ASX 200.

The Health Care and Telecommunication Services sectors were the top gaining sectors, gained 0.25% and 0.17% respectively in their index values. The Energy and Materials Sectors were the top 2 declining sectors, declined 4.24% and 1.12% respectively in their index values.

Nanosonics Limited (ASX: NAN) and Iress Limited (ASX: IRE) were the top gainers, with 7.505% and 3.089% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, Ramelius Resources Limited (ASX: RMS) and Woodside Energy Group Ltd (ASX: WDS) were the top losers, with 10.910% and 7.231% drop in share prices, respectively.

  • The S&P/ASX 200 declined by 0.77% as investors analysed Reserve Bank of Australia governor Philip Lowe's speech following the bank's 25 basis point rise.
  • Oil prices began to regain today after some of their recent losses due to the likelihood of restricting U.S. supply; however, concerns about increasing interest rates due to the Federal Reserve's recent hawkish signals also contributed to the recovery.
  • Asian shares sank dramatically on Wednesday, as the dollar rose after hawkish comments from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell highlighted the potential of the U.S. central bank resorting to hefty rate rises to confront sticky inflation.
  • Mesoblast Limited surged 14.05% after the US Food and Drug Administration's Office of Therapeutic Products authorised its resubmission for a steroid-refractory therapy.
  • Invocare Limited dropped 0.6% as TPG increased its position in the firm to 19.98%, increasing its chances of completing a clean takeover without any competitors.
  • Dow has closed lower by 1.72%, S&P 500 closed lower by 1.53%, and NASDAQ closed lower by 1.25%.
  • The Hang Seng is down by 2.44%. and the FTSE 100 is down by 0.13%.
