S&P/ASX 200 Closed Lower; 9 Sectors Closed in Red

By the end of the trading session on 13 December 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 0.41% and settled at AU$8,296.00. Nine sectors closed lower, while two sectors gained momentum along with the ASX 200.

The Energy and Financials sectors were the only gaining sectors, gained 0.44% and 0.16% in its index value. On the other hand, the Materials and A-Reit sectors were the top 2 declining sectors, declined by 1.84% and 0.77% in their index values.

Ventia Services Group Limited (ASX: VNT) and Iress Limited (ASX: IRE) were the top gainers, with 10.810% and 8.189% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, HMC Capital Limited (ASX: HMC) and Bellevue Gold Limited (ASX: BGL) were the top losers, with a 7.243% and 4.745% drop in share prices, respectively.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • Software provider Iress was among the top gainers, leaping 8.2 per cent to AU$9.38 after it reaffirmed earnings guidance of AU$126 million to AU$132 million for fiscal year 2024 and announced the reinstatement of dividends.
  • The S&P/ASX 200 closed the session by 0.4 percent, dropping 34.3 points to AU$8,296, marking its lowest level in four weeks. The index declined by 1.5 percent for the week, representing the largest drop since early August. The All Ordinaries also fell by 0.4 percent. Out of the 11 sectors, nine experienced declines, with significant losses observed in the mining sector. In Singapore, iron ore prices dropped by 2.4 percent, falling below $104 per US ton.
  • Oil prices has risen along with Asian equities on signs of a slow recovery in China’s economy as traders look to Thursday’s OPEC+ meeting for further direction.
  • The Dow has closed by 0.53%, the S&P 500 closed by 0.54%, and the NASDAQ ended lower by 0.66%.
  • Hang Seng is down by 1.39%, and FTSE 100 is up by 0.12%.
