Market Alert : Global Sell-Off Extends: Liquidity Fears and Growth Concerns Dominate

Market Close Commentary: 17 February 2022

By the end of the day’s trade on 17 February 2022, ASX 200 index moved marginally up by 0.155% and settled at 7296.2. Most indices settled in the green zone except Information Technology and communication services.

The communication services sector was the worst performer for the day, with a drop of 3.04% in the index value. Information Technology and All technology index dropped 2.9% and 2.341%, respectively. The Healthcare sector was the top gainer for the day, with 2.97% growth in the index value. The index improved by 5.02% for the past 5 days. Big players from this segment, like CSL Limited (ASX: CSL), noted more than 5% growth in its share price and was amongst the top 5 gainers on ASX.

ASX 200 performance was driven by the encouraging results posted by several players within the index.

IPH Limited (ASX:IPH) was the top gainer for the day, with more than a 9% growth in the share price. The Company reported an 11% growth in EBITDA and a 4% increase in interim dividends. It highlighted that network and integration supported its underlying earnings in 1H FY2022 earnings.

On the other hand, Wesfarmers (ASX: WES) noted ~7.5% drop in its share price, driven by weak 1H FY2022 results. WES recorded a double-digit decline in its NPAT and operating cash flows. Thus, it became the top loser for the day.

  • Industrial (Up 0.869 %)

Worst performing sectors for the day:

  • Consumer Discretionary (Down 3.374%)
  • Communication services (Down 3.040%)

Factors Influencing Market on 17 February 2022:

  • NASDAQ Composite ended the session in the red zone. The index slipped by 0.11% and settled at 14,124.10.
  • There also exist fear amongst investors with respect to the increase in Russian troop near Ukraine.
  • Global Index Hang Seng dropped 0.35% and FTSE 100 by 0.07%.
  • NSW and Victoria announced ease of COVID-19 restriction.
