ASX/200 Closed higher by 0.36%, Lifted by Materials

By the end of the trading session on 19 March 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended higher by 0.36% and settled at 7,703.20. Out of 11 sectors, 04 closed higher along with the ASX 200.

Materials and Energy were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 2.22% and 2.00% respectively in their index values. Consumer Staples and Financial were the top-losing sectors, losing 0.79% and 0.48% respectively in their index values.

Nickel Industrials Limited (ASX: NIC) and Bellevue Gold Limited (ASX: BGL) were the top gainers, with 8.108% and 6.705% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, Polynovo Limited (ASX: PNV) and Liontown Resources Limited (ASX: LTR) were the top losers, with 6.383% and 3.489% drop in share prices, respectively.

  Other Factors influencing the market:

  • Miner New Hope increased by 3.8% to $4.60 following the announcement of an interim dividend of 17¢ per share. The company reported underlying earnings of $424.8 million and a net profit of $251.7 million for the six-month period.

  • Aussie Broadband's shares remained unchanged at $3.57 after the company filed an "urgent" request in the Federal Court seeking permanent and interlocutory injunctions to overturn Superloop's notice.
  • Pacific Smiles, a dental clinic operator, saw a significant surge of 11.4% to $1.66 after receiving a revised non-binding proposal from Genesis Capital to acquire all its shares at $1.75 each in cash.
  • The Reserve Bank of Australia, represented by Michele Bullock, commented on the Bank of Japan's decision earlier today to raise rates for the first time since 2007.
  • In the stock market, the Dow closed up by 0.20%, the S&P 500 up by 0.63%, and the NASDAQ ended the day higher by 0.82%.
  • However, the Hang Seng index experienced a decline of -1.14%, while the FTSE 100 also saw a slight decrease of -0.06% on the same day.
