ASX/200 Closed lower by 1.34%, Dragged down by Information Technology
By the end of the trading session on 03 April 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 1.34% and settled at 7,782.50. Out of 11 sectors, 09 closed lower along with the ASX 200.
Utilities and Energy sectors were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 0.17% and 0.05% respectively in their index values. On the other hand, Information Technology and A-REIT sector was the top-losing sector, losing 3.87% and 3.12% respectively in their index values.
Ramelius Resources Limited (ASX: RMS) and West African Resource Limited (ASX: WAF) were the top gainers, with 5.248% and 5.098% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, Credit Corp Group Limited (ASX: CCP) and Stanmore Resources Limited (ASX: SMR) were the top losers, with 6.204% and 5.829% drop in share prices, respectively.
Westgold shares plummeted by 14.8%, reaching $2.36, following the revision of its fiscal 2024 production guidance to between 220,000 to 230,000 ounces at an all-in cost ranging from $2100 to $2300.
Mighty Craft witnessed a remarkable surge of 25%, reaching 2.5¢, subsequent to the sale of two assets by the struggling craft beer company to alleviate its substantial debt burden.
The simultaneous surge in both gold and oil prices is indicative of the resurgence of geopolitical risks in the markets, posing a new threat to the ongoing rally in risk assets like equities and cryptocurrencies.
Gold maintained its position near a new record, while silver achieved a two-year high, buoyed by statements from two Federal Reserve officials affirming expectations for three rate cuts in 2024, thereby bolstering the outlook for precious metals.
The Dow closed with a decline of 1.00%, the S&P 500 dipped by 0.72%, and the NASDAQ concluded the session lower by 0.95%.
The Hang Seng index experienced a downturn of -0.97%, while the FTSE 100 index saw a decline of -0.22% during today's trading session.
