ASX/200 Closed Lower by 0.98%, Dragged down by Information Technology

By the end of the trading session on 19 April 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 0.98% and settled at 7,567.30. All 11 sectors closed lower along with the ASX 200.

Information Technology and Financial sectors were the top-losing sectors, losing 1.68% and 1.46% respectively in their index values.

Genesis Minerals Limited (ASX: GMD) and Santos Limited (ASX: STO) were the top gainers, with 2.739% and 1.820% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, Polynovo Limited (ASX: PNV) and Karoon Energy Limited (ASX: KAR) were the top losers, with 5.583% and 5.406% drop in share prices, respectively.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • Santos, an energy producer, experienced a notable increase of 1.8% in its stock price, closing at $7.83, benefiting from the strengthening of oil prices.

  • Gold mining companies also saw gains, driven by the rise in the price of gold to over $2400 per ounce. Perseus Mining rose by 1.3% to $2.30, while De Grey Mining increased by 1.1% to $1.35.
  • Karoon Energy, however, faced a decline in its stock performance, dropping by 5.4% to $2.10. This decrease followed a downgrade in oil production guidance for its Brazilian assets in the fiscal year 2024.
  • The Australian dollar depreciated by 0.7% against the US dollar, reaching $US63.9¢, nearing a five-month low. Analysts cautioned that if oil prices surpass $100 per barrel, it could potentially lead to a 15¢ per litre increase in Australian petrol prices.
  • In the US market, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed slightly higher by 0.06%, while the S&P 500 and NASDAQ ended the day with declines of 0.22% and 0.58% respectively.
  • Internationally, the Hang Seng index experienced a decline of -1.13%, while the FTSE 100 index saw a modest increase of 0.37% during the trading session.
