ASX/200 Closed Lower by 0.92%, Dragged down by A-REIT

By the end of the trading session on 31 December 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed lower by 0.92% and settled at 8,159.10. Out of 11 sectors, 09 sectors ended lower along with the S&P/ASX 200.

Energy and Utilities are the top-gaining sectors, gaining 0.47% and 0.33% in their index value. On the other hand, A-REIT and Consumer Discretionary are the top-losing sectors, losing 1.76% and 1.35% in their index value.

Karoon Energy Limited (ASX: KAR) and Neuren Pharmaceuticals Limited (ASX: NEU) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 3.345% and 2.459% in their stock prices. On the other hand, JB HI-FI Limited (ASX: JBH) and Car Group Limited (ASX: CAR) went down by 4.088% and 3.198% respectively are the top-losing stocks.

  • Gold miners, including Regis Resources, led the decline, with Regis closing down 2.7% at $2.55 after gold prices dropped.
  • The consumer discretionary sector also fell, dragged down by Wesfarmers, which dropped 1.2% to $71.53, and Commonwealth Bank, which fell 1.2% to $153.25.
  • Oil and gas explorer Karoon Energy provided some relief, gaining 3.4% to $1.39, supported by Brent Crude settling at a two-week high.
  • Equity strategists predict Australian investors may encounter more frequent and steeper sell-offs in 2025, driven by high valuations and the impact of protectionist tariffs, despite the bull market's continuation.
  • The Dow has closed low by 0.97%, the S&P 500 closed down by 1.07%, and the NASDAQ ended lower by 1.19%.
  • The Hang Seng is up 0.09%, and the FTSE 100 is down -0.35% today.
