Market Alert : Global Sell-Off Extends: Liquidity Fears and Growth Concerns Dominate

ASX/200 Closed Lower by 0.85%, Dragged down by Information Technology

By the end of the trading session on 17 May 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 0.85% and settled at 7,814.40. Out of 11 sectors, 10 sectors closed lower along with the ASX 200.

Materials sector was the top-gaining sector, gaining 0.53% respectively in their index value. On the other hand, Information technology and Healthcare sectors were the top-lossing sector, lossing 2.97% and 2.23% respectively in their index values.  

Bendigo And Adelaide Bank Limited (ASX: BEN) and Liontown Resources Limited (ASX: LTR) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 7.963% and 5.087% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Nanosonics Limited (ASX: NAN) and Strike Energy Limited (ASX: STX) are the top-losing stocks and are declining by 6.313% and 5.556% in their stock prices.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • Bendigo Bank reports a 2.3% decrease in cash profit for the ten months ending April 30, amounting to AU$464 million. The stock saw a 4.2% increase to AU$10.34 in early trading.

  • The bank notes that credit expenses remain low, and its net interest margin, after revenue share arrangements, stands at 1.87%.
  • The suspension of Star Entertainment’s Queensland casino licenses has been extended until December 2024. The company's shares traded flat at 46¢.
  • While gold has made headlines with a record-setting rally, silver is outperforming with stronger momentum, benefiting from robust financial and industrial demand.
  • Market indices reflect a mixed performance: the Dow closed down by 0.10%, the S&P 500 by 0.21%, and the NASDAQ by 0.26%. 
  • However, the Hang Seng saw a 0.53% increase, while the FTSE 100 experienced a slight decline of -0.08% today.
