ASX/200 Closed Lower by 0.59%, Dragged down by Consumer Staples

By the end of the trading session on 23 September 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed lower by 0.59% and settled at 8,160.90. Out of 11 sectors, 08 sectors ended lower along with the S&P/ASX 200.

Energy and Utilities are the top- gaining sectors, gaining 1.04% and 1.02% in their index value. Whereas Consumer Staples and Consumer Discretionary are the top-losing sectors, losing 2.85% and 1.19% in their index value.

Boss Energy Limited (ASX: BOE) and Healius Limited (ASX: HLS) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 8.209% and 6.832% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Webjet Limited (ASX: WEB) and EVT Limited (ASX: EVT) went down by 10.815% and 4.056% respectively are the top-losing stocks.

  • Austal Limited (ASX: ASB) surged 2.4% to $3.04 after securing a $US152 million ($220 million) contract with the US Navy to assist in submarine deliveries.
  • Telix Pharmaceuticals (ASX: TLX) gained 1.9%, closing at $20.69, following the announcement of its acquisition of US-based RLS (USA) for $US230 million in an upfront cash deal.
  • Healius Limited (ASX: HLS) jumped 7.5% to $1.73 after disclosing the sale of Lumus Imaging to funds managed by Affinity Equity Partners.
  • The Australian dollar strengthened by 0.4%, reaching US68.33¢, approaching a yearly high, after China's central bank unexpectedly reduced its 14-day repo rate by 10 basis points.
  • US Markets: The Dow Jones rose by 0.09%, while the S&P 500 slipped 0.19%, and the NASDAQ fell 0.36%.
  • Global Markets: The Hang Seng climbed by 1.36%, whereas the FTSE 100 declined by 1.19%
