ASX/200 Closed Lower by 0.40%, Dragged down by Utilities

By the end of the trading session on 05 November 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed lower by 0.40% and settled at 8,131.80. All 11 sectors ended lower along with the S&P/ASX 200.

Utilities and Financials are the top-losing sectors, losing 0.71% and 0.62% in their index value.

Lifestyle Communities Limited (ASX: LIC) and The Star Entertainment Group Limited (ASX: SGR) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 7.692% and 7.142% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Domino’s Pizza Enterprises Limited (ASX: DMP) and Capricorn Metals Limited (ASX: CMM)  went down by 6.260% and 4.186% respectively are the top-losing stocks.

  • Domino’s Pizza Enterprises Limited (ASX: DMP) saw a 6.3% drop, closing at $31.60 following the announcement that CEO Don Meij will step down after 22 years. The company also reported weak same-store sales for the first 17 weeks of the fiscal year.
  • Mineral Resources Limited (ASX: MIN) shares rebounded 4.1% to $38.20, after a previous near-10% drop to $36.70 on news that founder Chris Ellison plans to exit within the next 18 months.
  • Lifestyle Communities Limited (ASX: LIC) rose 7.7% to $9.10 as filings revealed HMC Capital, an activist investor, had taken a stake in the company.
  • The Star Entertainment Group Limited (ASX: SGR) broke a five-day losing streak, climbing 7.1% to 22.5 cents. Earlier, Perpetual offloaded 129.7 million shares valued at around $26 million at 20 cents per share.
  • Sigma Healthcare Limited (ASX: SIG) fell 2.2% to $1.97, as approximately 11 million shares were traded in a block trade. Meanwhile, the ACCC is still reviewing an $8.8 billion merger proposal with Chemist Warehouse.
  • Oil prices climbed after OPEC+ postponed a December production increase, and Iran signaled a potential response to recent developments in Israel.
  • In the U.S. markets: the Dow Jones fell 0.61%, the S&P 500 dropped 0.28%, and the NASDAQ ended 0.31% lower.
  • In the international markets: Hong Kong’s Hang Seng gained 0.30%, while the UK’s FTSE 100 edged up by 0.09%.
