ASX/200 Closed Lower by 0.33%, Dragged down by Energy

By the end of the trading session on 29 August 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed lowe by 0.33% and settled at 8,045.10. Out of 11 Sectors, 08 sectors ended lower along with the S&P/ASX 200.

Financial and Industrials are the top-gaining sectors, gaining 0.32% and 0.28% in their index value. Energy and Consumer Discretionary are the top-losing sectors, losing 2.15% and 1.95% in their index value.

Bega Cheese Limited (ASX: BGA) and Ramelius Resources Limited (ASX: RMS) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 9.389% and 4.265% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Red 5 Limited (ASX: RED) and Kelsian Group Limited (ASX: KLS) went down by 12.329% and 8.707% respectively are the top-losing stocks.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • The flagship airline bounced back from initial losses, closing 0.8% higher at $6.37 after announcing its plan to resume dividend payments next year, marking the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The wagering group continued its downward trend, finishing 5.2% lower at 45.5¢ after a 15% drop on Wednesday due to a second asset write-down within a year.
  • The fund management company fell 3.8% to $19.86 as its chairman, Tony D’Aloisio, and two board directors announced their departures.
  • The dairy manufacturer was the top gainer, surging nearly 10% to close at a two-year high of $4.66 after returning to profitability.
  • On Wednesday, oil prices fell by 1% following a smaller-than-expected reduction in US crude stockpiles and ongoing concerns about Chinese demand. However, losses were limited by supply risks in the Middle East and Libya.
  • The Dow ended the day down 0.39%, the S&P 500 fell 0.60%, and the NASDAQ dropped 1.12%.
  • The Hang Seng has risen by 0.07%, while the FTSE 100 has decreased by 0.02%.
