Market Alert : Global Sell-Off Extends: Liquidity Fears and Growth Concerns Dominate

ASX/200 Closed Lower by 0.28%, Dragged down by Industrials

By the end of the trading session on 28 May 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 0.28% and settled at 7,766.70.  Out of 11 sectors, 09 closed lower along with the ASX 200.

Consumer Staples and A-REIT sectors were the top-gaining sector,  gaining 0.19% and 0.04% respectively in their index values. Industrials and Utilities were the top-lossing sector, lossing 1.01% and 0.90% respectively in their index values. 

Centuria Capital Group Limited (ASX: CNI) and Nickel Industries Limited (ASX: NIC) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 4.225% and 3.208% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Boss Energy Limited (ASX: BOE) and Healius Limited (ASX: HLS) are the top-losing stocks and are declining by 10.862% and 5.000% in their stock prices.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • South Australian producer Boss Energy fell 10.9% to AU$4.76 after the CEO sold over AU$20 million in shares. Namibian uranium producer Paladin decreased by 0.6% to AU$15.65.
  • Car dealership group Peter Warren issued a profit warning, citing squeezed margins due to increased competition as sales slow amid rising household costs. The shares dropped 12.6% to AU$1.87.
  • Medical software company Pro Medicus announced five new contracts in the US worth at least AU$45 million. The stock rose 0.9% to AU$114.31.
  • Oil prices steadied after two days of gains despite rising tensions in the Middle East following the death of an Egyptian soldier in a clash with Israeli troops.
  • The Dow closed up 0.01%, the S&P 500 rose 0.70%, and the NASDAQ gained 1.10%. 
  • The Hang Seng is down 0.04%, and the FTSE 100 is down 0.26% today.
