ASX/200 Closed lower by 0.20%, Dragged down by Financial

By the end of the trading session on 14 March 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 0.20% and settled at 7,713.60. Out of 11 sectors, 07 closed lower along with the ASX 200.

Materials and Consumer Staples were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 1.82% and 0.61% respectively in their index values. Financial and Consumer Discretionary were the top-losing sectors, losing 2.02% and 0.78% respectively in their index values.

Sandfire Resources Limited (ASX: SFD) and Evolution Mining Limited (ASX: EVN) were the top gainers, with 10.309% and 9.523% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, Polynovo Limited (ASX: PNV) and Eagers Automobile Limited (ASX: APE) were the top losers, with 6.828% and 6.757% drop in share prices, respectively.

 Other Factors influencing the market:

  • Appen's stock plummeted by 17.1% to 80 cents after Innodata, based in New Jersey, withdrew its $154 million bid for the ASX-listed company. This withdrawal came a day after Appen disclosed it had received a confidential takeover offer.
  • Aussie Broadband experienced an 18% decline, reaching $3.50, following the loss of a white-label agreement with Origin Energy. The deal was instead awarded to telecommunications provider Superloop.
  • Superloop, after winning the white-label deal with Origin Energy, upgraded its FY24 earnings guidance. Consequently, its shares surged by 24.8% to $1.31.
  • DigitalX, a Bitcoin fund manager, initiated a capital raise of $3 million from Australian investors. Trading of DigitalX stock was halted at 8 cents.
  • The Dow Jones closed higher by 0.10%, while the S&P 500 ended the day down by 0.19%. Meanwhile, the NASDAQ experienced a decrease of 0.54%.
  • The Hang Seng index recorded a decline of -0.65%, whereas the FTSE 100 index saw an increase of 0.31% for the day.
