Market Alert : Global Sell-Off Extends: Liquidity Fears and Growth Concerns Dominate

ASX/200 Closed Lower by 0.15%,Dragged down by Materials

By the end of the trading session on 21 May 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 0.15% and settled at 7,851.70. Out of 11 sectors, 07 sectors closed higher along with the ASX 200.

Information Technology and Industrials sectors were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 0.85% and 0.73% respectively in their index values. On the other hand, Materials and Telecommunications Services sectors were the top-lossing sector, lossing 0.83% and 0.73% respectively in their index values.  

ALS Limited (ASX: ALQ) and Technology One Limited (ASX: TNE) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 5.293% and 5.056% in their stock prices. On the other hand, James Hardie Industries PLC (ASX: JHX) and The Star Entertainment Limited (ASX: SGR) are the top-losing stocks and are declining by 14.790% and 7.408% in their stock prices.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • Lab testing company ALS rose 5% to $14.58 despite a profit slump caused by a write-down of its Nuvisan acquisition, aligning with market expectations.
  • Star Entertainment dropped 7.4% to 50¢ due to confusion surrounding a proposal from Hard Rock Hotels & Resorts (Pacific), making it the second-worst performer.
  • Diagnostics giant Sonic Healthcare fell 6% to $25.01 after announcing lower-than-expected profits impacted by inflation and currency exchange issues.
  • The Australian dollar decreased by 0.1% to US66.58¢, with money markets suggesting a 50% chance the RBA will reduce the cash rate to 4.1% this year. 
  • The Dow closed down by 0.49%, the S&P 500 slightly up by 0.09%, and the NASDAQ rose by 0.65%. 
  • The Hang Seng dropped 2.26%, while the FTSE 100 edged up 0.05%.
