Market Alert : Global Sell-Off Extends: Liquidity Fears and Growth Concerns Dominate

ASX/200 Closed Lower by 0.15%, Dragged down by Energy

By the end of the trading session on 22 March 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 0.15% and settled at 7,770.60. Out of 11 sectors, 07 closed lower along with the ASX 200.

A-REIT and Healthcare were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 1.35% and 1.04% respectively in their index values. Energy and Materials were the top-losing sectors, losing 1.36% and 0.81% respectively in their index values.

Fisher and Paykel Healthcare Corporation Limited (ASX: FPH) and Virgin Money UK PLC (ASX: VUK) were the top gainers, with 7.706% and 4.050% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, Genesis Minerals Limited (ASX: GMD) and Bellevue Gold Limited (ASX: BGL) were the top losers, with 6.250% and 5.277% drop in share prices, respectively.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • In New York, the three primary stock indexes reached new highs, with their gains slightly tempered due to Apple dropping 4.1% amid a lawsuit from the US Department of Justice.

  • On the ASX, energy shares declined by 1.3% following a dip in crude oil prices, influenced by a stronger US dollar and mixed feelings about the Federal Reserve's anticipated rate cuts, causing Brent to close under $US86.
  • Gold's price decreased to approximately $US2180 an ounce, even after hitting a new high, maintaining a roughly 10% increase since mid-February.
  • Fisher & Paykel Healthcare saw a 7.7% increase to $24.18, leading the gains on the ASX 200 after revising its yearly earnings forecast upwards.
  • Market updates show the Dow rising by 0.68%, the S&P 500 by 0.32%, and the NASDAQ by 0.20%. 
  • Conversely, the Hang Seng fell by -2.66%, while the FTSE 100 experienced a 1.88% increase.
