Market Alert: ASX200 at Critical Support – Reversal or Further Fall?

ASX/200 Closed Lower by 0.14%, Dragged down by Materials

By the end of the trading session on 26 February 2025, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed lower by 0.14% and settled at 8,240.70. Out of 11 sectors, 07 ended lower along with the S&P/ASX 200.

Energy and Financial are the top-gaining sectors, gaining 1.29% and 0.71% % in their index value. On the other hand, Materials and A-REIT is the top-losing sector, losing 1.61% and 1.37% in their index value.

Bapcor Limited (ASX: EVT) and Worley Limited (ASX: WOR) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 13.363% and 12.457% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Wisetech Global Limited (ASX: WTC) and Iress Limited (ASX: IRE) went down by 20.091% and 14.477% respectively are the top-losing stocks.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • Flight Centre’s stock declined 11.2%, despite a 7% rise in underlying profit to $117 million. The travel booking company achieved record productivity levels through automation, but the market reacted negatively.
  • Bapcor Limited (ASX: BAP) surged 14.7% after announcing that its cost-saving initiatives for FY 2024-25 are expected to reach the upper range of its $20 million to $30 million target.
  • Worley Limited (ASX: WOR) jumped 10.5% following the announcement of a $500 million share buyback and a 72% surge in interim net profit to $183 million.
  • PointsBet Holdings skyrocketed 31.3% after receiving acquisition interest from Japanese firm Mixi and competitor BlueBet. However, BlueBet alleged that PointsBet favored Mixi’s bid while disregarding its offer.
  • Scentre Group fell 3.2%, despite reporting a full-year net profit of $1 billion, a substantial increase from $174.9 million the previous year. The decline was attributed to portfolio revaluations impacting property values.
  • Kelsian Group plummeted 15.5% after reporting a 7.9% decline in underlying profit to $39.7 million.
  • Bitcoin hit a three-month low, falling below $US90,000, as investors shifted away from riskier assets.
  • The Dow Jones edged up 0.37%, while the S&P 500 slipped 0.47%. Meanwhile, the NASDAQ saw a sharper decline, dropping 1.35%.
  • The Hang Seng Index fell 1.32%, reflecting broader market weakness, whereas the FTSE 100 managed a modest gain of 0.11%.
