ASX/200 Closed Lower by 0.13%, Dragged down by Consumer Staples

By the end of the trading session on 02 October 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed lower by 0.13% and settled at 8,198.20. Out of 11 sectors, 08 sectors ended lower along with the S&P/ASX 200.

Energy and Utilities are the top- gaining sectors, gaining 2.35% and 0.97% in their index value. Whereas,  Consumer Discretionary and Information Technology are the top-losing sectors, losing 1.73% and 1.58% in their index value.

Sigma Healthcare Limited (ASX: SIG) and Karoon Energy Limited (ASX: KAR) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 7.932% and 7.541% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Vault Minerals Limited  (ASX: VAU) and Amotiv Limited (ASX: AOV) went down by 4.478% and 3.327% respectively are the top-losing stocks.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • Viva Leisure’s stock dropped by 0.7% to $1.35, despite a strong outlook for Q2 FY2025, driven by expansion plans and a record number of member visits.

  • MFF Capital Investments, led by Chris Mackay, remained flat at $3.86, after initially declining due to its announcement to acquire global fund manager Montaka Global Investments.
  • Hotel Property Investments saw a 0.8% rise to $3.76 after turning down a $3.65 per share takeover bid from Charter Hall and Hostplus, stating that the offer undervalued the business.
  • According to a World Gold Council report, a 100-point increase in the Geopolitical Risk Index (GPR) results in a 2.5% rise in gold prices.
  • Brent and WTI oil futures each rose over 1% in early Asian trading amid fears of potential oil production disruptions in the Middle East.
  • The Dow Jones dropped 0.41%, the S&P 500 fell 0.93%, and the NASDAQ declined 1.53%. The Hang Seng Index surged 5.68%, while the FTSE 100 increased 0.48%.
