Market Alert : Global Sell-Off Extends: Liquidity Fears and Growth Concerns Dominate

ASX/200 Closed Higher by 1.12%, Lifted by Financial

By the end of the trading session on 21 March 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended higher by 1.12% and settled at 7,782.00. Out of 11 sectors, 09 closed higher along with the ASX 200.

Financial and Consumer Discretionary were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 1.74% and 1.50% respectively in their index values. Utilities and Healthcare were the top-losing sectors, losing 0.59% and 0.17% respectively in their index values.

Webjet Limited (ASX: WEB) and Bellevue Limited (ASX: BGL) were the top gainers, with 9.170% and 8.152% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, Strike Energy Limited (ASX: STX) and Spark New Zealand Limited (ASX: SPK) were the top losers, with 4.000% and 3.672% drop in share prices, respectively.

  Other Factors influencing the market:

  • Brickworks shares fell by 3.1% to AU$28.31 following the announcement of a half-year loss of AU$52 million and property valuation impairment of AU$233 million.

  • Sigma, a chemist store operator and pharmaceutical wholesaler, saw a 1.2% increase in shares to AU$1.23 after reporting a 9% rise in same-store sales to AU$3.32 billion for the fiscal year ending January 31.
  • Australia's unemployment rate dropped to 3.7%, reducing expectations for Reserve Bank interest rate cuts in 2024.
  • The Australian dollar rose by 0.6% to US66.2¢ at market close, while the 1-year government bond, indicating short-term cash rate expectations, increased by 2 basis points to 4%.
  • Market indices showed positive trends: the Dow closed up by 1.03%, the S&P 500 by 0.89%, and the NASDAQ by 1.25%.
  • The Hang Seng index rose by 1.87%, whereas the FTSE 100 experienced a slight decrease of -0.01% for the day.
