ASX/200 Closed Higher by 0.95%, Lifted by Consumer Discretionary

By the end of the trading session on 26 September 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed higher by 0.95% and settled at 8,203.70. Out of 11 sectors, 10 sectors ended higher along with the S&P/ASX 200.

Consumer Discretionary and Materials are the top- gaining sectors, gaining 2.22% and 1.92% in their index value. Whereas, Energy is the top-losing sectors, losing 0.13% in their index value.

Brickworks Limited (ASX: BKW) and Paladin Energy Limited (ASX: PDN) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 7.330% and 7.001% in their stock prices. On the other hand,Fletcher Building  Limited  (ASX: FBU) and Woodside Energy Group Limited (ASX: WDS) went down by 3.285% and 2.680% respectively are the top-losing stocks.

  • Brickworks, an ASX-listed building materials company, surged 7.2% to $28.52 after surpassing expectations with its underlying profit results.
  • China plans to intensify counter-cyclical fiscal and monetary policy adjustments to meet its annual economic and social development goals, according to state media reports on Thursday.
  • U.S. markets saw mixed results, with the Dow dropping 0.70%, the S&P 500 declining 0.19%, and NASDAQ edging up 0.04%. 
  • Meanwhile, the Hang Seng rose 3.15%, and the FTSE 100 fell 0.17%.
