ASX/200 Closed Higher by 0.58%, Lifted by Industrials

By the end of the trading session on 30 August 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed higher by 0.58% and settled at 8,091.90. Out of 11 Sectors, 08 sectors ended higher along with the S&P/ASX 200.

Industrials and Energy are the top-gaining sectors, gaining 1.65% and 1.27% in their index value. Consumer Discretionary and Healthcare are the top-losing sectors, losing 0.46% and 0.10% in their index value.

Downer EDI Limited (ASX: DOW) and Karoon Energy Limited (ASX: KAR) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 16.945% and 9.841% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Ramsay Healthcare Limited (ASX: RHC) and Harvey Norman Holdings Limited (ASX: HVN) went down by 6.755% and 6.340% respectively are the top-losing stocks.

  • TPG Telecom announced plans to cut jobs in response to ongoing inflation pressures, following a 40% drop in interim net profit to $29 million. The company's shares rose by 8.3% to $4.96.
  • Harvey Norman, an electronics and furniture retailer, saw its shares decline by 6.3% to $4.58 after reporting a 35% decrease in net profit to $352.5 million for 2023-24. Despite this, the company maintained its final dividend at 12¢ per share.
  • Appen shares plunged 17.7% to $1 after the data-processing company’s group operating revenue dropped 18.4% to $113.4 million in the half-year, following the termination of a contract by Google.
  • Oil prices stabilized after a surge on Thursday due to positive US economic data and escalating supply disruptions in Libya.
  • The Dow Jones closed down by 0.59%, the S&P 500 remained flat, and the NASDAQ ended slightly lower by 0.23%.
  • The Hang Seng index is up by 1.81%, while the FTSE 100 has increased by 0.43% today.
