ASX/200 Closed Higher by 0.46%, Lifted by Information Technology

By the end of the trading session on 12 August 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended Higher by 0.46% and settled at 7,813.70. Out of 11 sectors, 09 sectors ended higher along with the S&P/ASX 200.

Information Technology and Consumer Discretionary are the top-gaining sectors, gaining 1.93% and 1.91% in their index value. On the other hand, Materials and Energy are the top-losing sectors, losing 0.56% and 0.49% in their index value.

JB HI-FI Limited (ASX: JBH) and Tabcorp Holdings Limited (ASX: TAH) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 8.327% and 7.964% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Beach Energy Limited (ASX: BPT) and Aurizon Holdings Limited  (ASX: AZJ) went down by 12.631 % and 8.840% respectively are the top-losing stocks.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • CAR Group saw a 4.5% increase in share price, reaching AU$35.14, following a 41% rise in revenue to AU$1.1 billion for FY24.
  • Aurizon experienced an 8.8% decline in share price, falling to AU$3.30, after providing weak FY25 guidance. Despite reporting a 25% increase in annual net profit to AU$406 million, the company also announced a share buyback of up to AU$150 million.
  • Beach Energy shares dropped 12.6% to AU$1.245 due to a significant downgrade at its new Enterprise gas field in southeast Australia.
  • Oil prices remained steady after experiencing their first weekly gain since early July. The market is awaiting Iran's response to the assassination of a Hamas leader in Tehran last month.
  • The Dow Jones increased by 0.13%, the S&P 500 rose by 0.47%, and the NASDAQ climbed by 0.51%. 
  • The Hang Seng increased by 0.04%, while the FTSE 100 gained 0.28% today.
