Market Alert : Global Sell-Off Extends: Liquidity Fears and Growth Concerns Dominate

ASX/200 Closed Higher by 0.35%, Lifted by Materials

By the end of the trading session on 15 May 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended higher by 0.35% and settled at 7,753.70. Out of 11 sectors, 08 sectors closed higher along with the ASX 200.

Materials and Healthcare sectors were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 1.19% and 0.80% respectively in their index values. On the other hand, Industrials and Energy sectors were the top-lossing sectors, lossing 0.63% and 0.54% respectively in their index values.  

IDP Education Limited (ASX: IEL) and Neuren Pharmacy Limited (ASX: NEU) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 7.052% and 5.643% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Healius Limited (ASX: HLS) and Fletcher Building Limited (ASX: FBU) are the top-losing stocks and are declining by 5.971% and 4.000% in their stock prices.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • The Australian Agricultural Company saw its stock drop by 1.4% to $1.39 after reporting a net loss of $94.6 million for the year, citing a "challenging" 12 months and declining cattle prices.

  • Iress, a financial services software firm, experienced a 1.8% decrease in its stock price to $8.29 following a security breach on a third-party platform that resulted in a client data leak.
  • Patriot Battery Metals' stock fell by 5.3% to 77.5¢ after its nine-month contract with mining giant Albemarle did not culminate in a formal agreement.
  • Oil prices increased as an industry report indicated declining US stockpiles, with traders anticipating insights from an upcoming International Energy Agency report on market balances for the second half of the year.
  • The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by 0.32%, the S&P 500 increased by 0.48%, and the NASDAQ went up by 0.75%. 
  • Meanwhile, the Hang Seng index dropped by 0.22%, and the FTSE 100 index increased by 0.16%.
