ASX 200 Ended Lower By 0.67%; Weighed Down By Materials And Energy Sectors
By the end of the trading session on 23 March 2023, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 0.67% and settled at 6,968.60. Out of 11 sectors, 9 sectors closed lower along with the ASX 200.
Consumer Staples and Communication Services sectors were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 0.13% and 0.08% respectively in their index values. On the other hand, Materials and Energy Sectors were the top declining sector, declining 1.13% and 0.82% in their respective index values.
United Malt Group Limited (ASX: UMG) and Brickworks Limited (ASX: BKW) were the top gainers, with 5.521% and 3.125% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, Megaport Limited (ASX: MP1) and Lake Resources Limited (ASX: LKE) were the top losers, with 8.521% and 8.081% drop in share prices, respectively.
S&P/ASX 200 declined today in line with the New York losses as Federal Reserve lifted rates by 0.25% and signaled at least one more hike this year.
Gold prices rose today, hovering below the key US$2,000 level amid expectations that the Federal Reserve will have limited headroom to hike interest rates further, which also pulled the dollar lower.
Oil prices fell following three sessions of gains, after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell highlighted banking sector credit risks for the world's largest economy, while U.S. crude stocks rose more than expected.
The Dow closed down by 1.63%, the S&P 500 by 1.65%, and the NASDAQ by 1.60%.
The Hang Seng increased by 1.42%, and the FTSE 100 up by 0.41% today.
