ASX 200 Ended Lower By 0.53%; 8 Out Of 11 Sectors Closed In Red
By the end of the trading session on 28 September 2022, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 0.53% and settled at 6,462.00. Out of 11 sectors, 8 sectors closed lower along with the ASX 200.
The Utilities and Telecommunication Services sectors were the top 2 gaining sectors, gained 1.90% and 1.39% in their index values. On the other hand, the Information Technology and Consumer Discretionary sectors were the top 2 declining sectors, declined by 1.61% and 1.05% in their index values.
Coronado Global Resources Limited (ASX: CRN) and Ramelius Resources Limited (ASX: RMS) were the top gainers, with 5.921% and 5.737% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, Telix Pharmaceuticals Limited (ASX: TLX) and Core Lithium Ltd (ASX: CXO) were the top losers, with a 15.399% and 7.563% drop in share prices, respectively.
S&P/ASX 200 ended lower as hawkish comments from Federal Reserve officials brewed more concerns over heightened interest rates, pushing investors out of risk-driven assets and into the dollar.
Telix Pharmaceuticals was the biggest laggard of the day as the oncology business announced a setback in Europe. It withdrew its application for marketing authorisation for Illuccix in Europe in what it describes as an “unexpected” and “extremely disappointing” result.
Australia Bureau of Statistics announced that retail sales rose 0.6% in August from a month earlier, slightly stronger than consensus forecasts for a 0.4% increase.
The Australian dollar tumbled below 64¢ amid further gains in the US dollar and weak equity markets.
Oil prices declined as further gains in the dollar and figures pointing to higher US stockpiles countered speculation that OPEC+ would cut output.
Dow has closed down 0.4%, S&P 500 down by 0.2%, and NASDAQ closed higher by 0.3%.
Hang Seng is down by 2.91%, and FTSE 100 is down by 0.52%.
