ASX 200 Ended Lower By 0.27%; Dragged Down By IT Sector

By the end of the trading session on 03 October 2022, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 0.27% and settled at 6,456.90. Out of 11 sectors, 8 sectors closed lower along with the ASX 200.

The Utilities and Energy sectors were the top 2 gaining sectors, gained 1.55% and 1.01% in their index values. On the other hand, the Information Technology and Consumer Staples sectors were the top 2 declining sectors, declined by 1.33% and 1.13% in their index values.

Capricorn Metals Ltd (ASX: CMM) and Origin Energy Limited (ASX: ORG) were the top gainers, with 3.333% and 2.901% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, West African Resources Limited (ASX: WAF) and Ramelius Resources Limited (ASX: RMS) were the top losers, with a 10.000% and 5.595% drop in share prices, respectively.

  • S&P/ASX 200 closed lower as concerns over worsening global economic growth kept the dollar close to a 20-year peak. At the same time, Australian and New Zealand currencies rose ahead of their respective interest rate decisions this week.
  • Stocks in Asia struggled to make headway, and US equity futures fell as negative sentiment persisted in markets amid fear that global central banks will keep hiking rates until inflation is tamed, raising the risk of a recession.
  • West African Resources' share price dropped 10% following a change in the military leadership in Burkina Faso on the weekend, where its Sanbrado gold operation is located.
  • Core Lithium’s share price fell after completing its AU$100 million placement at AU$1.03 a share.
  • Oil prices gained today as OPEC+ considers cutting output of up to 1 million barrels per day at a meeting this week to support the market.
  • Dow has closed down 1.7%, S&P 500 down by 1.5%, and NASDAQ closed lower by 1.5%.
  • Hang Seng is down by 1.41%, and FTSE 100 is up by 0.18%.
