ASX 200 Ended Lower By 0.21%; 9 Out Of 11 Sectors Closed Lower

By the end of the trading session on 21 February 2023, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 0.21% and settled at 7,336.30. Out of 11 sectors, 9 sectors closed lower along with the ASX 200.

The Materials and Energy sectors were the top gaining sectors, gained 0.61% and 0.35% respectively in their index values. The Telecommunication Services and Information Technology Sectors were the top 2 declining sectors, declined 1.18% and 1.10% respectively in their index values.

Johns Lyng Group Limited (ASX: JLG) and Hub24 Limited (ASX: HUB) were the top gainers, with 13.214% and 7.740% rise in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, Ingenia Communities Group (ASX: ING) and Monadelphous Group Limited (ASX: MND) were the top losers, with 13.420% and 8.811% drop in share prices respectively.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • Johns Lyng Group Limited had been the top gaining stock of the day after the company had upgraded its FY23 revenue and EBITDA guidance by 11.2% and 5.5%, respectively, after providing solid earnings growth for the first half of the year.
  • Ingenia Communities, a housing group, experienced a sharp decline in its share price by approx. 13%, dropping to AU$4.00 due to a downgrade in its FY23 guidance. In the first half, the company's statutory profit plummeted by 16%, amounting to AU$33.7 million.
  • Viva Energy's share price declined, after it has achieved a record EBITDA (on a replacement cost basis) of AU$1.1 billion in the fiscal year that ended December 31, representing a 122% increase from the previous year, but missed market expectations.
  • The prices of oil experienced a sharp decline, reversing a recent upswing. This occurred as the markets braced themselves for multiple indications on U.S. monetary policy for the week, and the strength of the dollar exerted additional pressure.
  • Dow closed up by 0.38%, S&P 500 down by 0.28%, and NASDAQ ended lower by 0.58%.
  • The Hang Seng has decreased by 1.65% while the FTSE 100 has shown an increase of 0.12% for today.
