Market Alert : Global Sell-Off Extends: Liquidity Fears and Growth Concerns Dominate

ASX 200 Ended Higher By 0.87%; 10 Out Of 11 Sectors Closed In Green

By the end of the trading session on 22 March 2023, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended higher by 0.87% and settled at 7,015.60. Out of 11 sectors, 10 sectors closed higher along with the ASX 200.

Energy and Consumer Staples sectors were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 4.19% and 1.77% respectively in their index values. A-REIT Sector was the only declining sector, declined 0.52% in its index value.

New Hope Corp Limited (ASX: NHC) and Woodside Energy Group Limited (ASX: WDS) were the top gainers, with 5.263% and 5.195% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, Silver Lake Resources Limited (ASX: SLR) and Regis Resources Limited (ASX: RRL) were the top losers, with 5.628% and 5.040% drop in share prices, respectively.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • S&P/ASX 200 is gaining as capital markets advanced across Europe and New York on bets that the worst of the banking crisis has passed. Both UBS and Credit Suisse were higher in Swiss trading.
  • Woodside Energy experienced a significant gain of 5.2%, marking its strongest increase since October of the previous year. Beach Energy also performed well, advancing by 4.8%. 
  • After the appointment of David Foster as its new chairman, Star Entertainment rebounded from early losses and closed 0.7% higher.
  • Oil prices in early Asian trade on Wednesday edged down as industry data suggested that inventories in the world's largest crude consumer would continue to rise.
  • The Dow rose by 0.98%, the S&P 500 rose by 1.30%, and the NASDAQ closed higher by 1.58%. 
  • The Hang Seng rose 1.92%, and the FTSE 100 rose 1.79% today.
