Market Alert : Global Sell-Off Extends: Liquidity Fears and Growth Concerns Dominate

ASX 200 Ended Higher By 0.47%; Buoyed By Materials And Energy Sectors

By the end of the trading session on 28 February 2023, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended higher by 0.47% and settled at 7,258.40. Out of 11 sectors, 7 sectors closed higher along with the ASX 200.

The Materials and Energy sectors were the top-gaining sectors, gained 1.52% and 1.49% respectively in their index values. The Utilities and Health Care Sector was the top declining sectors, declined 1.27% and 0.56% in their index values.

De Grey Mining Limited (ASX: DEG) and Lake Resources N.L. (ASX: LKE) were the top gainers, with 7.722% and 6.837% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, Harvey Norman Holdings Limited (ASX: HVN) and Adbri Limited (ASX: ABC) were the top losers, with 7.452% and 7.066% drop in share prices, respectively.

  • Adbri Limited’s share price close lower today after it has reported a 12% decline in its net profit to AU$103 million for the full year and decided not to distribute any final dividend payout.
  • Harvey Norman was the top declining stock following the company announced that sales in January at its franchised stores in Australia were more than 10% lower than the previous year, indicating that shoppers are reducing spending due to the increasing cost of living.
  • Oil prices are gaining today as traders awaited more signals from Chinese and U.S. business activity readings due this week, although fears of increasing interest rates and slowing economic growth saw markets nursing steep losses.
  • The Dow rose by 0.22%, the S&P 500 gained by 0.31%, and the NASDAQ increased by 0.63%. 
  • The Hang Seng declined by 0.41%, and the FTSE 100 rose by 0.72%.
