Market Alert : Global Sell-Off Extends: Liquidity Fears and Growth Concerns Dominate

ASX 200 Ended Higher By 0.42%; Buoyed By Energy And IT Sectors

By the end of the trading session on 17 March 2023, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended higher by 0.42% and settled at 6,994.80. Out of 11 sectors, 8 sectors closed higher along with the ASX 200.

Energy and Information Technology sectors were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 2.30% and 1.12% respectively in their index values. The A-REIT and Healthcare Sectors were the top declining sector, declined 1.54% and 0.66% in their respective index values.

Liontown Resources Limited (ASX: LTR) and Paladin Energy Limited (ASX: PDN) were the top gainers, with 8.196% and 6.869% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, Kelsian Group Limited (ASX: KLS) and Evolution Mining Limited (ASX: EVN) were the top losers, with 8.662% and 5.148% drop in share prices, respectively.

  • S&P/ASX 200 closed higher as Wall Street rallied on news that America’s biggest banks are preparing to help shore up First Republic Bank in a bid to steady the banking sector.
  • ANZ Bank predicts that the Reserve Bank will increase interest rates by 0.25% at both its April and May meetings, resulting in a terminal cash rate of 4.1%. Westpac, on the other hand, forecasts that the Reserve Bank will keep interest rates on hold in April, with a final increase of 0.25% in May.

  • The Hang Seng rose by 1.94%, and the FTSE 100 increased by 0.89% on the day.
