Market Alert : Global Sell-Off Extends: Liquidity Fears and Growth Concerns Dominate

ASX 200 Ended Higher By 0.23%; Lifted By Materials And Energy Sectors

By the end of the trading session on 29 March 2023, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended higher by 0.23% and settled at 7,050.30. Out of 11 sectors, 8 sectors closed higher along with the ASX 200.

Materials and Energy sectors were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 1.25% and 1.24% respectively in their index values. A-REIT and Financial Sectors were the top declining sector, declining 0.72% and 0.46% in their respective index values.

Deterra Royalties Limited (ASX: DRR) and Reliance Worldwide Corporation Limited (ASX: RWC) were the top gainers, with 5.309% and 4.815% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, Megaport Limited (ASX: MP1) and Core Lithium Limited (ASX: CXO) were the top losers, with 5.939% and 4.445% drop in share prices, respectively.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • ALS Limited's share price gained after the company lifted its underlying net profit guidance to between $312 million and $322 million for FY23 as compared to previous guidance of between $300 million and $320 million.
  • NAB experienced a decline of 2.2%, while Bank of Queensland dropped 1.7%, coming close to its lowest level in two and a half years.
  • The inflation rate for February in Australia was lower than most projections and followed the latest policy statement and meeting minutes.
  • Crude oil prices rose by 1.34% to reach 6058 due to concerns about supply and indications of rising demand, which were supported by strong Chinese demand. U.S. crude oil inventories were expected to increase by around 200,000 barrels last week.
  • The Dow fell by 0.12%, the S&P 500 dropped by 0.16%, and the NASDAQ finished lower by 0.45%.
  • The Hang Seng increased by 2.08%, while the FTSE 100 rose by 0.17%.
