ASX 200 Ended Flat; Energy and Utilities Sectors Were The Top Performers

By the end of the trading session on 06 October 2022, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended flat at 6,817.50. Out of 11 sectors, 5 sectors closed higher, and 6 sectors closed lower.

The Energy and Utilities sectors were the top 2 gaining sectors, gained 2.21% and 1.08% in their index values. On the other hand, A-REIT and Consumer Discretionary were the top 2 declining sectors, declined by 0.84% and 0.77% in their index values.

Whitehaven Coal Limited (ASX: WHC) and Pilbara Minerals Limited (ASX: PLS) were the top gainers, with 7.172% and 5.675% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, Magellan Financial Group Limited (ASX: MFG) and Kelsian Group Limited (ASX: KLS) were the top losers, with an 8.433% and 3.608% drop in share prices, respectively.

  • S&P/ASX 200 closed flat at 6817.5 on Thursday, as gains in the energy sector offset losses in real estate and consumer discretionary.
  • Australian Bureau of Statistics said in a report that Australia’s trade surplus declined further from record highs in August, as slowing economic activity, particularly in top importer China, weighed on demand for the country’s major commodity exports.
  • Magellan Financials’ share price plunged following the company reported that its Funds under Management declined 11.6% in September.
  • Rating agency Fitch lowered the outlook for its credit rating for British government debt to "negative" from "stable".
  • Oil prices edged up today after OPEC+ agreed to further tighten global crude supply with a deal to slash oil production by about 2 million barrels per day.
  • Dow has closed flat, S&P 500 down by 0.2%, and NASDAQ closed lower by 0.4%.
  • Hang Seng is up by 0.16%, and FTSE 100 is down by 0.48%.
