ASX 200 Closed Lower By 1.87%; Global Rates Race Higher
By the end of the trading session on 23 September 2022, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 1.87% and settled at 6,574.20. All 11 sectors closed lower along with the ASX 200. The Consumer Discretionary and Information Technology sectors were the top 2 declining sectors, declined by 4.443% and 4.442% in their index values.
New Hope Corporation Limited (ASX: NHC) and Whitehaven Coal Limited (ASX: WHC) were the top gainers, with 2.759% and 2.678% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, Block Inc (ASX: SQ2) and Xero Limited (ASX: XRO) were the top losers, with an 8.944% and 7.840% drop in share prices, respectively.
S&P/ASX 200 dropped sharply, with global bond yields increasing as central bankers press the rate pedal to check persistent inflation, heightening recession odds.
Whitehaven coal’s share price gained as the company recorded “phenomenal” coal prices, driving a 12-fold increase in full-year profits.
OZ Minerals' share price gained as the company pulled the trigger on a new $1.7 billion copper-nickel mine in remote Western Australia in a development that could flush out the next move from takeover suitor BHP.
Australia’s 10-year bond yields rose to 3.94%. The Aussie dollar traded around 66¢.
Oil prices were slightly lower today and headed towards the fourth weekly loss as concerns over headwinds from rising interest rates outweighed expectations that crude supply would tighten due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Dow has closed down 0.4%, S&P 500 down by 0.8%, and NASDAQ closed lower by 1.4%.
Hang Seng is down by 0.63%, and FTSE 100 is down by 1.08%.
