Market Alert : Global Sell-Off Extends: Liquidity Fears and Growth Concerns Dominate

ASX/200 Closed Lower By 1.50%; Dragged down by Information Technology

By the end of the trading session on 16 August 2023, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 1.50% and settled at 7,195.20. Out of 11 sectors, 10 sectors closed lower along with the ASX 200.

A-REIT sectors were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 0.09% respectively in their index values. Information Technology and Materials sectors were the top declining sectors, declining 2.93% and 2.63% respectively in their index values.

Bapcor Limited (ASX: BAP) and Mirvac Group Limited (ASX: GUD) were the top gainers, with 5.451% and 5.263% growth in share prices, respectively. Fletcher Building Limited (ASX: FBU) and Syrah Resources Limited (ASX: LKE) were the top losers, with 9.271% and 6.202% drop in share prices, respectively.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • UK inflation exceeded expectations for the past month, strengthening the case for the Bank of England to implement another interest rate hike.
  • The benchmark index saw Fletcher Building as the weakest performer, experiencing an 8.9% decline. The building products company reduced its final dividend payout.
  • Despite a lower net profit of $271.5 million for its 2023 fiscal year (a decrease from $1.21 billion), Vicinity Centres Group managed a 2.5% increase in its share price.
  • Crude oil faced a third consecutive day of decline, attributed to a drop in US inventories. West Texas Intermediate slipped by 0.2% to $US80.85 a barrel on Wednesday, following a 2.6% loss over the preceding two sessions.
  • The Dow Jones Industrial Average concluded with a 1.02% decrease, the S&P 500 with a 1.16% drop, and the NASDAQ down by 1.14%.
  • The Hang Seng index in Hong Kong experienced a decline of 1.31%, while the FTSE 100 in the UK saw a decrease of 1.57% on the same day.
