ASX/200 Closed lower by 0.74%; Dragged down by Information Technology
By the end of the trading session on 14 February 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 0.74% and settled at 7,547.70. Out of 11 sectors, 09 closed lower along with the ASX 200.
Industrials and Consumer Discretionary sectors were the top- gaining sectors, gaining 0.26% and 0.03% respectively in their index values. On the other hand, Information Technology and Financial and Financial sector was the top-losing sector, losing 1.32% and 1.21% respectively in their index values.
Sayona Mining Limited (ASX: SYA) and Downer EDI Limited (ASX: DOW) were the top gainers, with 18.421% and 11.136% growth in share prices, respectively. Graincorp Limited (ASX: GNC) and Fletcher Building Limited (ASX: FBU) were the top losers, with 12.303% and 8.649% drop in share prices, respectively.
GrainCorp's shares plummeted by 12.3% to $7.20 after the company announced an expectation of more than halving its underlying profit in FY24 compared to the previous year.
Downer EDI saw a significant increase of 11.1% in its share price, reaching $4.79, following its announcement of anticipated stronger profit margins in the latter half of the year.
IDP Education experienced a notable surge of 8.3% in its share price, reaching $21.92, coinciding with a 15% increase in revenue to $579 million. Additionally, its earnings before interest and tax rose by 25% to $159 million.
Oil maintained a streak of gains over seven days, influenced by contrasting perspectives from OPEC and the IEA, along with a mixed report on US stockpiles.
The Dow closed with a decline of 1.35%, the S&P 500 dropped by 1.37%, and the NASDAQ ended lower by 1.80%.
On the other hand, the Hang Seng index rose by 0.21%, while the FTSE 100 experienced a decrease of -0.81% for the day.
