Market Alert : Global Sell-Off Extends: Liquidity Fears and Growth Concerns Dominate

ASX/200 Closed Lower by 0.51%, Dragged down by Information Technology

By the end of trading session on 01 September 2025, benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 closed 0.51% lower at 8,927.70. Out of 11 sectors, 07 sectors ended lower along with the S&P/ASX 200.

Consumer Staples and Telecommunications Services are the top-gaining sector, gaining 0.35% and 0.31% in their it’s value. On the other hand, Information and Consumer Discretionary was the top-losing sector, losing 2.65% and 1.24% in it’s value.

Capricorn Metals Limited (ASX: CMM) and Genesis Minerals Limited (ASX: GMD) are the top-gaining stocks, gaining 11.730% and 11.529% in their stock prices. On the other hand, Generation Development Group Limited (ASX: GDG) and Mesoblast Limited (ASX: MSB) are the top-losing stocks, losing 8.696% and 7.340% in their stock prices.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • RPMGlobal surged 22.8% to $4.63 after entering an exclusivity agreement with Caterpillar, following a non-binding proposal to acquire all shares and options at $5 per share.
  • Insurance Australia Group rose 0.6% to $8.76 after finalising an $855 million deal to secure a 90% stake in RACQ’s underwriting unit, alongside a 25-year distribution partnership with the Queensland motoring club.
  • Worley slipped 1.2% to $14.51 as non-executive director Sharon Warburton stepped down from the board, with former Incitec Pivot chief Jeanne Johns set to replace her.
  • Brent crude prices eased, down 0.7% to US$67.48 at the time of writing, after a week of narrow trading between US$67–68 amid ongoing Russia-Ukraine tensions.
  • On global markets, Wall Street ended mixed: the Dow Jones added 0.16%, the S&P 500 climbed 0.32%, and the Nasdaq advanced 0.53%. 
  • In Asia and Europe, the Hang Seng gained 2.15% and the FTSE 100 rose 0.27%.
