ASX/200 Closed lower by 0.03%, Dragged down by Telecommunications Services

By the end of the trading session on 28 February 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 0.03% and settled at 7,660.40. Out of 11 sectors, 06 closed higher along with the ASX 200.

Information Technology and Energy sectors were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 2.92% and 0.82% respectively in their index values. On the other hand, Telecommunications Services and Financial sector was the top-losing sector, losing 0.81% and 0.60% respectively in their index values.

Chalice Mining Limited (ASX: CHN) and NextDC Limited (ASX: NXT) were the top gainers, with 24.752% and 13.126% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, Kelsian Group Limited (ASX: KLS) and Neuren Pharmacy Limited (ASX: NEU) were the top losers, with 11.988% and 10.848% drop in share prices, respectively.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • Liontown Resources and Pilbara Minerals, both ranking among the most shorted stocks on the benchmark, experienced notable increases. Liontown Resources surged by 7.5% to reach $4.17, while Pilbara Minerals saw a 10% jump to $1.27.
  • Flight Centre's shares declined by 3.9% following the announcement of underlying earnings at $189 million, which fell 3% below consensus expectations. However, revenue met the anticipated levels.
  • Light & Wonder, a gaming technologies company, witnessed a significant increase of 5.9%, reaching $154.94. This surge followed the company's transition from a loss to a profit in 2023 compared to the previous year.
  • Oil prices experienced a decline after two days of gains, attributed to conflicting factors. Signs of increased US inventories countered expectations of an extension to supply cuts by OPEC+.
  • Market indices saw mixed performance: the Dow closed down by 0.16%, the S&P 500 by 0.38%, and the NASDAQ by 0.13%.
  • On the international front, the Hang Seng recorded a decrease of -0.08%, while the FTSE 100 also saw a slight decline of -0.02% for the day.
