Market Alert : Global Sell-Off Extends: Liquidity Fears and Growth Concerns Dominate

ASX/200 Closed Lower By 0.79%; Dragged down by Energy

By the end of the trading session on 30 October 2023, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended higher by 0.19% and settled at 6,772.90. Out of 11 sectors, 10 sectors closed lower along with the ASX 200.

Energy and Consumer Staples sectors were the top-declining sectors, gaining 2.51% and 1.33% respectively in their index values. Information Technology sector was the top-gaining sectors, gaining 0.43% respectively in their index values.

Inghams Group Limited (ASX: ING) and Nine Entertainment Limited (ASX: NEC) were the top gainers, with 2.402% and 2.209% growth in share prices, respectively. IGO Limited (ASX: IGO) and The Star Enrtertainment Limited (ASX: SGR) were the top losers, with 9.015% and 8.404% drop in share prices, respectively.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • IGO's stock declined by 9% to $9.69 due to its announcement of expected lower lithium prices impacting its sales for the current quarter.
  • Tietto Minerals witnessed a remarkable surge of 32.9% in its share price, reaching 56.5¢, following a bid from Zhaojin Mining, expressing interest in acquiring the West African gold miner.
  • Endeavour Group, the owner of Dan Murphy's, experienced a 2.2% decrease in its stock value, falling to $4.91. In its quarterly update, the liquor retailer observed that consumers were shifting towards more affordable product options.
  • Despite Israel committing forces to Gaza, oil prices have decreased. Tel Aviv's cautious approach, different from its initial stance, has raised speculations that the conflict may remain limited, despite Iran's rhetoric.
  • In terms of the U.S. stock market, the Dow recorded a 1.12% decline, the S&P 500 decreased by 0.48%, while the NASDAQ saw a 0.38% increase.
  • The Hang Seng index experienced a 0.45% drop, and the FTSE 100 also declined by 0.86% on the given day.
