Market Alert : Global Sell-Off Extends: Liquidity Fears and Growth Concerns Dominate

ASX/200 Closed Lower By 0.61%; Dragged down by Information Technology

By the end of the trading session on 26 October 2023, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 0.61% and settled at 6,812.30. Out of 11 sectors, 10 sectors closed lower along with the ASX 200.

Utilities sector was the top-gaining sectors, gaining 0.91% respectively in their index values. Information Technology and A-REIT sectors were the top-declining sectors, gaining 2.78% and 2.16% respectively in their index values.

IDP Education Limited (ASX: IEL) and Super Retail Group Limited (ASX: SUL) were the top gainers, with 5.876% and 4.590% growth in share prices, respectively. Megaport Limited (ASX: MP1) and Block Inc. (ASX: SQ2) were the top losers, with 16.334% and 8.025% drop in share prices, respectively.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • Westpac experienced a 1.1% decline in its stock price, settling at $20.57. The bank reported anticipated losses of $173 million in the financial year ending on September 30.
  • Pilbara Minerals saw a 0.5% drop in its stock, closing at $3.86. The company's revenue for the September quarter was 42% lower than the previous quarter, amounting to $493.1 million.
  • Fortescue Metals, on the other hand, witnessed a 0.9% increase in its stock price, reaching $22.21. The mining giant successfully shipped 45.9 million tonnes of iron ore via Port Hedland during the September quarter.
  • Oil prices stabilized after a recent surge driven by concerns of a potential Israeli ground invasion of Gaza. These geopolitical tensions have reignited worries about a possible escalation that could disrupt energy supplies.
  • In the stock market, the Dow recorded a 0.32% decrease, while the S&P 500 saw a more significant decline of 1.43%. The NASDAQ, in particular, ended the day with a substantial 2.43% drop in its index.
  • The Hang Seng index in Hong Kong experienced a 0.76% decline in its performance, while the FTSE 100 in the United Kingdom managed to achieve a modest 0.33% increase during the trading day.
