Market Alert : Global Sell-Off Extends: Liquidity Fears and Growth Concerns Dominate

ASX/200 Closed Lower By 0.54%; Dragged down by Information Technology

By the end of the trading session on 26 September 2023, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 0.54% and settled at 7,038.20. Out of 11 sectors, 09 sectors closed lower along with the ASX 200.

Healthcare and Financial sectors were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 1.08% and 0.14% respectively in their index values. Information Technology and Materials sectors were the top-declining sectors, gaining 1.93% and 1.66% respectively in their index values.

Pro Medicus Limited (ASX: PME) and Polonovo Limited (ASX: PNV) were the top gainers, with 12.361% and 5.555% growth in share prices, respectively. Genesis Mineral Limited (ASX: GMD) and Sayona Mining Limited (ASX: SYA) were the top losers, with 7.027% and 5.914% drop in share prices, respectively.

  • Qantas Airways saw a decline of 1.3% following CLSA's issuance of a "sell" rating, marking the first such rating by a major broker in a year.
  • Pro Medicus, an imaging company, experienced a remarkable surge of 12.4% and emerged as the top performer on the main index. This surge came on the heels of securing a $140 million contract with Baylor Scott & White Health, based in the United States.
  • Coronado Global Resources, a mining company, witnessed a 2.2% increase in its shares after Sev.en Global Investments, a Czech-based company, acquired a 51% stake from the Energy & Minerals Group.
  • Oil prices remained stable following a volatile session on Monday. This stability came as Russia eased its fuel restrictions.
  • The Dow closed with a 0.13% gain, the S&P 500 posted a 0.40% increase, and the NASDAQ finished the day with a 0.45% rise.
  • Conversely, the Hang Seng index experienced a decline of -0.93%, while the FTSE 100 saw a -0.78% decrease on the current day.
