Market Alert : Global Sell-Off Extends: Liquidity Fears and Growth Concerns Dominate

ASX/200 Closed lower by 0.50%; Dragged down by Materials

By the end of the trading session on 08 January 2023, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 0.07% and settled at 7,451.50. All 11 sectors closed lower along with the ASX 200.

Materials and Healthcare sectors were the top-losing sectors, losing 0.90% and 0.76% respectively in their index values.

Boss Energy Limited (ASX: BOE) and Paladin Energy Limited (ASX: PDN) were the top gainers, with 8.747% and 3.448% growth in share prices, respectively. Core Lithium Limited (ASX: CXO) and Magellan Financial Group Limited (ASX: MFG) were the top losers, with 16.309% and 7.669% drop in share prices, respectively.

  • Lithium newcomer Kali Metals experienced an impressive debut on the ASX, surging 74% to 43.5¢ per share on its first day of trading after successfully concluding an oversubscribed initial public offering the previous week.
  • Red 5, a mining company, saw a 3.6% increase, reaching 29¢ per share. The company expressed confidence in achieving the upper end of its FY24 guidance following a productive quarter of production at its King of the Hills project in Western Australia.
  • Metcash has appointed former CEO of Premier Investments and JB Hi-Fi, Richard Murray, as the new chief executive of its Total Tools Holdings business. This decision comes after the departure of Paul Dumbrell.
  • Oil prices experienced a decline as Saudi Arabia reduced official selling prices for all regions. This move highlighted a deteriorating outlook, outweighing concerns related to tensions in the Red Sea and supply disruptions in Libya.
  • The Dow closed with a marginal increase of 0.03%, while the S&P 500 decreased by 0.34%, and the NASDAQ concluded the session with a 0.56% decline.
  • The Hang Seng index showed a significant decrease of -2.14%, and the FTSE 100 also experienced a decline of -0.43% on the current trading day.
