Market Alert : Global Sell-Off Extends: Liquidity Fears and Growth Concerns Dominate

ASX/200 Closed lower by 0.39%; Dragged down by Consumer Staples

By the end of the trading session on 04 January 2023, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 0.39% and settled at 7,494.10. Out of 11 sectors, 07 sectors closed lower along with the ASX 200.

Energy and Utilities sectors were the top-losing sectors, losing 1.44% and 0.32% respectively in their index values. On the other hand, Consumer Staples and Materials sectors were the top-losing sectors, losing 0.97% and 0.64% respectively in their index values.

Insignia Financial Limited (ASX: IFL) and Johns Lyng Group Limited (ASX: JLG) were the top gainers, with 5.957% and 3.896% growth in share prices, respectively. Arcadium Limited PLC (ASX: LTM) and  Bellevue Gold Resource Limited (ASX: BGL) were the top losers, with 9.200% and 4.531% drop in share prices, respectively.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • The oil market saw an upward surge as disruptions in Libya's supply, heightened tensions in the Middle East, and a commitment to stabilizing prices from OPEC reignited bullish sentiment.
  • The Dow concluded with a 0.76% decrease, the S&P 500 was down by 0.80%, and the NASDAQ experienced a 1.18% decline.
  • In today's market, the Hang Seng index is down by -0.68%, while the FTSE 100 is lower by -0.51%.
