Market Alert : Global Sell-Off Extends: Liquidity Fears and Growth Concerns Dominate

ASX/200 Closed Lower By 0.37%; Dragged down by Healthcare

By the end of the trading session on 1 September 2023, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 0.37% and settled at 7,278.30. Out of 11 sectors, 08 sectors closed lower along with the ASX 200.

Energy and Consumer Discretionary sectors were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 1.61% and 0.30% respectively in their index values. Healthcare and A-REIT sectors were the top-declining sectors, gaining 1.52% and 1.13% respectively in their index values.

Sayona Mining Limited (ASX: SYA) and Whitehaven Limited (ASX: WHC) were the top gainers, with 4.545% and 3.940% growth in share prices, respectively. Chalice Mining Limited (ASX: SYA) and Polynovo Limited (ASX: PNV) were the top losers, with 7.283% and 5.705% drop in share prices, respectively.

Other Factors influencing the market:

  • Fortescue Metals faced a 5.3 percent decline in its stock value, falling to $20.3, following Guy Debelle's departure from Fortescue Future Industries. This marked the third high-profile exit in a single week for the company.
  • In contrast, the financial technology firm Link Administration saw a 1.9 percent increase in its stock price, reaching $1.365, after successfully finalizing the sale of its banking and credit management division.
  • Rio Tinto managed to recover from earlier losses, registering a 1.2 percent gain and reaching $114.23, while BHP Group experienced a slight dip of 0.3 percent, with its stock price at $44.74.
  • Oil prices exhibited signs of improvement, breaking a two-week losing streak by rising for the fourth consecutive session on Friday. 
  • In the broader market, the Dow closed down by 0.48 percent, the S&P 500 saw a 0.16 percent decrease, and the NASDAQ ended the day with a modest 0.11 percent increase.
  • The FTSE 100, on the other hand, experienced a decline of -0.46 percent in its performance for the day.
