ASX/200 Closed lower by 0.08%, Dragged down by Materials
By the end of the trading session on 20 February 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 0.08% and settled at 7,659.00. Out of 11 sectors, 06 closed higher along with the ASX 200.
Telecommunications Services and A-REIT sectors were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 1.50% and 0.81% respectively in their index values. On the other hand, Materials and Energy sector was the top-losing sector, losing 1.18% and 1.03% respectively in their index values.
ARB Corporation Limited (ASX: ARB) and HMC Capital Limited (ASX: HMC) were the top gainers, with 10.204% and 9.584% growth in share prices, respectively. Strike Energy Limited (ASX: STX) and The Star Entertainment Limited (ASX: SGR) were the top losers, with 25.863% and 19.643% drop in share prices, respectively.
Rio Tinto saw a decline of 2.2% to $128.04, Fortescue retreated by 0.7% to $28.21, and South32 skidded 3.4% to $2.84.
Iron ore prices in China and Singapore fell sharply for the second consecutive session, attributed to concerns about demand in China, despite efforts to support the property sector.
Stronger-than-expected results from the financial sector buoyed Hub24, HMC Capital, and Netwealth Group, pushing their stocks between 4.9% and 9.6% higher.
The Australian dollar remained subdued on Tuesday, despite a larger-than-expected interest rate cut in China and Reserve Bank minutes indicating consideration of raising borrowing costs this month.
The Dow experienced a 0.37% decline, the S&P 500 dipped by 0.48%, and the NASDAQ fell by 0.82%.
The Hang Seng index dropped by -0.51%, while the FTSE 100 rose by 0.22% today.
