Market Alert : Global Sell-Off Extends: Liquidity Fears and Growth Concerns Dominate

ASX/200 Closed Lower By 0.04%; Dragged down by A-REIT

By the end of the trading session on 25 October 2023, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 0.04% and settled at 6,854.30. Out of 11 sectors, 09 sectors closed lower along with the ASX 200.

Materials and Telecommunications Services sectors were the top-gaining sectors, gaining 1.62% and 0.78% respectively in their index values. A-REIT and Consumer Staples sectors were the top-declining sectors, gaining 2.00% and 1.43% respectively in their index values.

Telix Pharmacy Limited (ASX: TLX) and Kelsian Group Limited (ASX: KLS) were the top gainers, with 5.549% and 4.651% growth in share prices, respectively. Helius Limited (ASX: HLS) and Belluve Gold Limited (ASX: BGL) were the top losers, with 6.482% and 6.355% drop in share prices, respectively.

  • BHP's stock rose by 2.6% to $44.72, while Fortescue Metals Group saw an increase of 3.1% to reach $22.02. Rio Tinto also experienced a 2.4% jump, reaching $116.27 in stock value.
  • Kogan, the online retailer, reported an impressive 8.7% stock price increase, reaching $4.86, as its sales figures returned to growth in quarterly comparisons, despite a decline in annual sales.
  • Tabcorp, on the other hand, faced a 4.1% drop in its stock value, falling to 81.5c. The decline followed a 34% protest vote against executive pay at the company's AGM.
  • According to data from The American Petroleum Institute (API), crude oil inventories in the United States decreased by 2.668 million barrels for the week ending October 20. This decline followed a 4.383-million-barrel drop in crude inventories in the previous week.
  • The Dow Jones Industrial Average (Dow) concluded with a 0.58% decrease, the S&P 500 index experienced a 0.17% decline, while the NASDAQ Composite Index ended positively with a 0.27% gain.
  • In the global market, the Hang Seng Index registered a 0.96% increase, and the FTSE 100 displayed a 0.20% rise in its performance for the day.
