S&P/ASX 200 Closed In Red Today; Recorded Its Worst One-Day Decline In More Than A Month
By the end of the trading session on 05 December 2023, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended lower by 0.89% and settled at 7,061.20. Out of 11 sectors, 9 sectors closed lower along with the ASX 200.
The Utilities and Healthcare sectors were the only gaining sectors, gained 0.55% and 0.03% in its index value. On the other hand, the Energy and Materials sectors were the top 2 declining sectors, declined by 2.05% and 1.81% in their index values.
Evolution Mining Limited (ASX: EVN) and Coronado Global Resources Inc. (ASX: CRN) were the top gainers, with 2.475% and 2.352% growth in share prices, respectively. On the other hand, Core Lithium Ltd (ASX: CXO) and Liontown Resources Limited (ASX: LTR) were the top losers, with a 9.804% and 9.192% drop in share prices, respectively.
Australian shares recorded their worst one-day decline in more than a month, led by a sell-off in commodity stocks, amid an apparent shift in trader sentiment after last month’s strong rally.
Capricorn Metals Limited’s shares dropped after Chairman Mark Clark and director Mark Okeby sold 5 million and 2 million shares, respectively.
Evolution Mining Limited is in a trading halt today ahead of a AU$525 million share placement to fund an 80% interest in NSW gold and copper mine Northparkes.
Gold prices rose slightly in today, steadying after racing to record highs earlier in the week as persistent expectations of a less dovish Federal Reserve and increased safe haven demand supported the yellow metal.
Oil prices were little changed amid uncertainty over voluntary output cuts by OPEC+, continued tension in the Middle East and weak economic data from the U.S.
The Dow has closed down by 0.11%, the S&P 500 down by 0.54%, and the NASDAQ ended lower by 0.84%.
Hang Seng is down by 1.09%, and FTSE 100 is down by 0.22%.
