ASX/200 Closed higher by 0.77, Lifted by Information Technology
By the end of the trading session on 15 February 2024, the benchmark index S&P/ASX 200 ended higher by 0.77% and settled at 7,605.70. Out of 11 sectors, 08 closed higher along with the ASX 200.
Information Technology and A-REIT sectors were the top- gaining sectors, gaining 6.81% and 3.42% respectively in their index values. On the other hand, Energy and Materials sector was the top-losing sector, losing 2.10% and 0.66% respectively in their index values.
Altium Limited (ASX: ALU) and Sayona Mining Limited (ASX: SYA) were the top gainers, with 28.755% and 13.333% growth in share prices, respectively. Data#3 Limited (ASX: DTL) and Pro Medicus Limited (ASX: PME) were the top losers, with 13.088% and 13.036% drop in share prices, respectively.
Whitehaven Coal reduced its dividend to 7¢ due to declining coal prices and the necessity to finance an acquisition. Consequently, the stock experienced a 5.7% drop to $7.08.
Telstra adjusted its full-year earnings guidance downwards while reporting an 11.5% increase in interim net profit to $1 billion. Subsequently, the stock decreased by 2.3% to $3.90.
Origin Energy saw a 2.5% increase in its stock price to $8.78 following a remarkable 17-fold rise in profit for the first half.
The price of bitcoin surged above $80,000 ($US52,200) on Thursday afternoon, marking its first time surpassing this threshold since 2021.
Market indices showed positive movement: the Dow closed up by 0.40%, the S&P 500 rose by 0.96%, and the NASDAQ ended the day higher by 1.30%.
Additionally, the Hang Seng increased by 0.24%, while the FTSE 100 experienced a 0.75% rise today.
